for civil weddings in Kefalonia, Greece
The following information is applicable to British citizens choosing a civil wedding in Kefalona, Greece.
The bride and groom will need to obtain the following legal papers:
- Passport
- A valid 10-year passport.
- Full Birth Certificate
- Unlike the short version (which will not be accepted), a full certificate will contain your parents full names.
- Certificate of No Impediment (Freedom to Marry)
- Obtained from your local Registrar, these certificates must not be older than 90 days prior to the date of your wedding.
- Decree Absolute (only if applicable)
- If divorced, a Decree Absolute (bearing the court seal) will be required.
- Death Certificate (only if applicable)
- If widowed, a death certificate will be required.
- Adoption Certificate (only if applicable)
- If adopted, the adoption certificate will be required.
- Proof of Name Change (only if applicable)
- If a name change has occurred then a deed poll (statutory declaration) will be required.
Legalisation in United Kingdom
With the exception of passports, your legal documents must be legalised at the Legalisation Office of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London.
Greek translation in United Kingdom
The legalised documents need to be translated into Greek. The translation needs to be performed by Mr. Theo Kominis; a translator registered with the Greek Consulate and a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
The translated versions then require certification by the Greek Consulate in London.
