St. Christopher's Chapel

St. Christopher's chapel was built in 1844 by ancestors of the Mouikis family. Originally, the chapel was located near to the village of Sarlata, some 3 kilometres south of its current location.

In 1953 the island was victim to a tremendous earthquake. The chapel, along with many other buildings throughout the island, was destroyed beyond repair. Important icons and items from the chapel were salvaged and stored for safe-keeping.

In 1994 the chapel was rebuilt and relocated on the land of Mouikis Village in Lakithra, which is where it remains to this day. The rebuild, organised by the sons of Athanasios and Despina Mouikis, honoured a family obligation to see the family chapel restored.
